The accelerating pace of quantum research means that the cryptographic systems underpinning much of today’s digital infrastructure face a finite lifespan. According to the 2026 Global State of Post-Quantum and Cryptographic Security Trends report, UK and Ireland (UK&I) organisations are among the least prepared globally for this transition, with 68% reporting that they have not yet begun migrating to postquantum cryptography (PQC).
At the same time, industry-wide changes are introducing new pressures on organisations already struggling with visibility into their cryptographic assets. The most significant shift being public certificate validity windows reducing to 47 days by 2029.
For many, this creates a dual challenge: addressing long-term strategic risks posed by quantum computing while navigating short-term operational realities.
Understanding the Readiness Gap
Awareness of the quantum threat is growing, yet UK&I organisations face structural barriers that impede preparation:
- 92% describe their cryptographic management as difficult or extremely difficult, the highest proportion of any region surveyed
- Budget constraints (42%)and system fragmentation (49%) were cited as major blockers
- Half of UK&I practitioners (50%) expect a cryptographically disruptive quantum machine within five years
This suggests that while organisations intellectually understand the threat, they lack the tools, visibility, and processes to act on that understanding.
Why the Channel Community Plays a Unique Role
UK channel partners sit at the intersection of technology adoption and organisational strategy. As trusted advisors, they can help organisations:
- Interpret emerging standards and timelines
- Understand the implications of quantum safe cryptography
- Evaluate their cryptographic estate and visibility gaps
- Create pathways from current infrastructure to more resilient architectures
This isn’t about selling products; it’s about enabling organisations to make informed, long-term decisions in a rapidly shifting risk environment.
Key Considerations When Advising Customers
- Visibility is the first milestone
Organisations can’t modernise what they cannot see. Inventorying keys, certificates, and cryptographic dependencies is foundational for any future initiative.
- Automation is becoming unavoidable
With certificate lifetimes shrinking to just 47 days, manual processes will no longer be sustainable. Preparing now can prevent avoidable outages later.
- Crypto-agility must become a strategic objective
A future-ready organisation is one that can update cryptographic mechanisms quickly in response to new standards or threats – quantum or otherwise.
- Post-quantum migration will be staged, not sudden
PQC transition will require a multi-year approach including effort, testing, and operational change. Early preparation reduces the burden later.
A Moment for Leadership Across the Channel Ecosystem
The channel’s influence lies in its ability to contextualise complex technical shifts and translate them into clear, actionable strategies for customers of all sizes. This transition isn’t simply about adopting new algorithms – it’s about strengthening the UK’s digital resilience.
